Moving up the grade levels is an indication of growth in terms of skills and experience. When members join SBMEN at a grade level, they are expected to keep upgrading until they become certified editing professionals. To become certified, members must reach the professional grade in the society.
It is important to note that every grade level has a term limit in which a member can remain before they upgrade. Failure to upgrade can lead to the suspension of membership, unless for justifiable reasons. The Committee on Admission and Membership oversees the acceptance and qualification of applicants into the society as members.
In addition, upgrading membership to the next level is obtainable only by fulfilling the following mandatory requirements below:
Membership Upgrading Standard Test (MUST)
NOTE: SBMEN operates a points system to track their development activities and members must earn a total a required amount of points
|Man hours on freelance or job||20%|
|Members’ success on MUST (Members Upgrading Standard Tests) for each level||55%|
In addition to the criteria, members will be obligated to provide supporting documentation for more information such as requests for references from at least two freelance clients or your supervisor in your workplace and samples of work done over the course of the term in a grade level.
The Board of Trustees and Committee on Admission and Membership are in charge of assessing members’ performance. They are authorised to make recommendations to approve their advancement to a higher level, to stay in current level, or move to a lower level.
The goal of the SBMEN is to enable editors reach professional proficiency. It is compulsory for members to upgrade to attain professional membership within 8 years of joining the society. There are limits on how long a member can remain a member in a level without progressing to a higher professional grade.
