In 2017, Anwuli Ojogwu and Enajite Efemuaye founded SBMEN. Between both of them, they have spent most of their careers in book and magazine publishing for close to 20 years. They were inspired to set up an association for editors after they observed the difficulty in finding talent to hire, limited domestic training opportunities to improve their skills and the lack of a professional body to represent their interests. In 2018, they legally registered the organisation as a non-profit.
Their goal is to work together with editors, publishers and professionals in related fields to set standards in the profession that will improve the written word. It also aims to advance the profession of editing by improving the knowledge and skills of editors, helping them attain the highest levels of editorial competence comparable with other professionals around the world.
