SBMEN was established in 2017 with principles and experience dedicated to advancing the profession of editing.
The Society for Book and Magazine Editors is a pioneer non-profit organisation that represents editorial professionals with headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria. It was founded in 2017, and registered in 2018. SBMEN offers training, resources and events to editors to enhance their professional development. The Board of Trustees oversees its operations and a set of committees manages the different aspects of the organisation to ensure it adheres to the highest quality standards.
Our vision is to produce first class editors
Having spent most of their careers in book and magazine publishing for close to 20 years combined, in 2017, the founders of SBMEN were inspired to set up an association for editors after they observed the difficulty in finding talent to hire, limited domestic training opportunities to improve their skills and the lack of a professional body to represent their interests. In 2018, they legally registered the organisation as a non-profit.
The association will provide a community where every editor can have a sense of belonging and take ownership of their development. We will work together with all stakeholders (editors, publishers, professionals in related fields, and experts in different media) to adopt best practices that set acceptable standards in the profession to improve the written word and increase editors’ competency that matches other professionals around the world. Lastly, we will work towards elevating the importance and place of editing and the editor in the publishing industry.
