WordCaps Writing and Editing Mentorship

SBMEN in partnership with WordCaps programme will provide six weeks mentoring to writers and editors. Participants will get the opportunity to receive one-on-one mentoring and coaching from Lola Opatayo of WordCaps Canada to help them gain confidence in editing and writing.

How It Works

The cohort-styled programmes will include five mentees per time. That is, five writers in the writing programme, or five editors in the editing programme. This programme will include three virtual meetings with the group, weekly assignments, and feedback. Mentees will receive the following:

  • Reading resources (available through wordcaps.com)
  • Programme content (available through wordcaps.com)
  • Feedback on assignments
  • Opportunities to co-learn and network with fellow editors/writers.

Eligibility

This mentorship is available to only SBMEN members.

The following are eligible to apply for mentorship:

  • Beginner editors and writers with 0 –5 years of experience
  • Professionals pursuing a second career in editing or writing

Discount: SBMEN members will receive a 20% discount to participate in the programme

Method of Mentorship

  1. Tenure

The tenure of mentorship is six weeks for both writing or editing. An individual may not do both concurrently. However, they may be done consecutively. For example, a mentee may apply for the editing programme first, and then, upon completion, proceed to apply for the writing programme.

Both programmes will provide a twelve weeks immersion into writing and editing.

  1. Topics

Writing: the topics covered will be dependent on the type of writing involved. Non-fiction topics will include writing strategies, heuristics, drafting, and revision. Fiction (creative writing) topics will include character development, narrative viewpoint, and plot and structure. Bonus content will include career pathways for writers and editors and how to integrate artificial intelligence into workflows.

Editing: topics will include grammar essentials, editing types, a glance at document design and production, and tips for running a freelance business.
